Internet/World Wide Web

The Internet is a global networking system that connects other computers and networks from all over the world. Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn are credited with inventing the internet. They are the designers of the basic internet structure we have today and Transfer Control Protocol/Internetwork Protocol (TCP/IP) which are a set of rules that connect the computer to internet. Though it has been around since the 60s, January 1st, 1983 is considered the official birthday of the Internet. Before the TCP/IP, there was no way for computers to communicate with one another. The Internet was originally used as a weapon during the Cold War. Scientists would use it to share government data. Today, the Internet is used for almost everything, including the World Wide Web

The World Wide Web is a system of webpages that can be accessed through the Internet. Tim Berners-Lee is the inventor of the World Wide Web. When he went to work at a physics lab called CERN, Berners-Lee noticed that scientists had a difficult time sharing information. This observation sparked Tim's idea for the Web and by October 1990 Tim had created the first web page as well as, HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). All of these technologies are still in use today. While it was originally developed to make sharing research quick and easy, it started a wave of creativity and innovation from the public. Today, the World Wide Web is used for a variety of things such as research, shopping, school or blogs.

While the Web and the Internet are not the same thing, they do work together. The Web is an application on the Internet that allows ideas to be shared and for people to communicate. The Internet is the connected networks between computers that allow for applications like the Web to function. On August 6th, 1991, the first webpage, created by Tim Berners-Lee went public. The page gave information on the World Wide Web and explained the process of creating a website. The website is still up today and the URL is, http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html
