Portfolio

Image
This is my final portfolio with all of my projects throughout the semester. FMX-210 pushed me to work hard and to step outside of my comfort zone creatively. The hardest project to do was definitely the canvas because I was working with a program I had never used before as well as coding which is also something I was unfamiliar with. My favorite project to do was the somewhere project. Overall, I'm happy with how my projects and my portfolio turned out.

Business Cards

Image
For my business cards, I chose each color scheme because I wanted it to match with the logos. I also wanted to make the cards relatively minimalistic in order to not draw attention away from the logo itself. The most difficult part of this project was definitely coming up with the designs and then trying to create them on InDesign. I think the easiest part was the set up and choosing which font to use as well as the placement of the text.

Autoscopy

Image
For my autoscopy, I did my face in front of a thunderstorm with flowers in the sky. I made space spill from my face as well. I used thunder and violets because they've been incorporated in almost all of the rest of my projects and I wanted to include them. The hardest part of this project was trying to mask everything out. The easiest part was adding layers and effects to make everything look more cohesive.

Somewhere

Image
I chose to place myself hovering over the moon because it is somewhere I've never been and will likely never go. The hardest part of this project was definitely adding the adjustment layers and trying to create a shadow that makes it look like I was floating. In order to do that, I turned down the brightness and added a drop shadow. For the drop shadow, I rotated it 90 degrees in order to make it below my feet then I adjusted the distance, size, and spread. The easiest part was probably masking myself out of the original picture. I used the quick selection tool and then a layer mask to cut myself out.

BW to color

Image
To start this project, I first picked a color scheme. I used the main color of purple and then used an analogous, monochromatic, and triad schemes. The most tedious part of this project was making the selections. It was the most time consuming part of the entire assignment and I had trouble getting all the small details selected. The easiest part of this project was creating the masks and coloring the selections in. My favorite re-coloring is the analogous color scheme because I think the colors go really well together.

Tag Brush

Image
This is the final version of my tag brush. In order to create it, I used my black and white logo and turned it into a brush. The most difficult part of this process was deciding which splatter to use and trying to make the scratches and negative perfect. Once I was happy with how it looked I turned it into a brush by exporting it. Now I can use it on the rest of my projects.

Propaganda poster

Image
To make this poster I started with the self portrait. I began by outlining the features on my face then adding detail like eyelashes and shadows afterwards. Next I created the hand holding the can and the bottle "factories" in the background. The final part was the words. The words were by far the easiest part of this project. I think the most difficult part was either the self portrait or creating the bottles. The bottle shape was really frustrating and I could never get it right.      I chose to do my propaganda poster on recycling because it's something so easy and simple yet can be so effective. The tools I used for this project were mostly the pen tool. It was frustrating to use it for things like my eyelashes and the highlights in the hair but for everything else the pen tool was really easy to use.

Logo

Image
The first image is the original sketch I designed for this logo. I wanted to incorporate my zodiac sign as well as my favorite flower, a violet. The bottom picture is the final black and white photo and the three colored version. I chose to do purple for the flowers because violets are purple and green for the stem to show a traditional flower. For the yellow one, I chose to do yellow and blue to represent stars and the night sky. The easiest part of this logo was creating the constellation since it is just straight lines and the most difficult part was making it so the flowers were visible even when the logo was small.

Calligram

Image
For this project, I used the butterfly because it symbolizes freedom. and growth and that is what  I hope to achieve in 20 years. To make this I used the pen tool to create the outline of the butterfly then I filled it in using the text tool and the words from my letter to myself. The most difficult part of this project was drawing the butterfly. I had a hard time making it look even and getting the words to all fit in the space. I chose the cursive font because I thought it matched the delicateness of a butterfly and I picked a lavender color because it is my favorite.  Letter to myself: Dear Sinclaire,  It’s 20 years later and you’re now 38. Currently you’re sitting in class writing this letter even though it was due before class. This letter is for the next art project we’re doing and we’re trying to meet a word count. We’re learning how to use illustrator but you’re listening to treat people with kindness by harry. I hope in 20 years we’re doing something big w...

Illustrator tutorials

Learn Illustrator in 5 MINUTES beginner tutorial -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GzumUieDPY        In this video the creator went over many features and tools. I learned that control N creates a new document and control J duplicates a layer. I learned how to use the eyedropper tool, which will be useful if I ever need to exactly match a color. The video also showed how to change the size of a shape while keeping all sides the same. How To Start Using Adobe Illustrator -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vHKwYhkE7U&list=WL&index=2 In this video I learned about pathfinder and typography. The video showed how to combine shapes using pathfinder. The video also showed how to create more than one workspace if you run out of room while working. I think typography will be very useful during the calligram project because we will be using the words from our letters.  Using Adobe Illustrator: 10 Tips For Beginners -  https://www.youtube.com/watch...

Canvas

Image
Time spent: 8 hours Original Idea: Final design: Artist Statement      The inspiration for this project came from my love of thunderstorms. I wanted to create a simple thunderstorm landscape. This piece is important to me because I recently got a lightning bolt tattoo and that tattoo was the reason behind this design. I went back and forth a lot with this idea because I was unsure I could create something I would be happy with. I finally realized that I could use simple shapes to make the raindrops, clouds and lightning. I think what makes my piece most successful is the gradient background.     I started with the background of the landscape and the moon. I made the outer edges really dark because I knew I was going to put the storm clouds there and I tried to make the center lighter in order to show a beam of light coming from the moon. The most difficult part of the project was the actual ground.  I had trouble getting the bezier and quadratic curv...

Internet/World Wide Web

The Internet is a global networking system that connects other computers and networks from all over the world. Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn are credited with inventing the internet. They are the designers of the basic internet structure we have today and Transfer Control Protocol/Internetwork Protocol (TCP/IP) which are a set of rules that connect the computer to internet. Though it has been around since the 60s, January 1st, 1983 is considered the official birthday of the Internet. Before the TCP/IP, there was no way for computers to communicate with one another. The Internet was originally used as a weapon during the Cold War. Scientists would use it to share government data. Today, the Internet is used for almost everything, including the World Wide Web      The World Wide Web is a system of webpages that can be accessed through the Internet. Tim Berners-Lee is the inventor of the World Wide Web.  When he went to work at a physics lab called ...
